Understanding the Format of Edexcel GCSE Business Exam Papers

Choosing which GCSEs to study is an important decision and one of the factors may be the format of the assessment and whether it will suit you or your son or daughter.

Here we breakdown the exam structure, question types and timing to help inform your decision on whether the Edexcel GCSE Business is the right choice for you.

Overview of the GCSE Business Exam Structure

The Edexcel GCSE Business qualification consists of two written exam papers. There is no coursework.

Each paper tests different areas of the course content and skills. Both papers last 1 hour and 45 minutes, with each paper worth 90 marks and contributing 50% to the final grade.

• Paper 1 focuses on the theme of Investigating Small Business.

• Paper 2 covers the theme of Building a Business.

  
  

Both papers are structured in the same format, with the same types of questions (using the same command words) used each exam sitting.

• Section A comprises 35 marks and does not include a business context.

• Section B comprises 30 marks with all questions based on a given business context.

• Section C comprises 25 marks with all questions based on a given business context.

You must answer all questions and calculators are allowed.

Types of Questions to Expect

The GCSE Business (Edexcel) exam papers include a variety of question types to assess different skills:

• Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) require selecting the correct answer(s) from several options. Section A has 5 MCQs on both papers, worth 1 or 2 marks each.

• Short-answer questions may ask for brief explanations, definitions or calculations. These often focus on specific business concepts or calculations and may be worth 1, 2 or 3 marks.

• Open response questions are 6 mark discuss or analyse questions and may consider a benefit, disadvantage or impact of a business concept.

• Extended writing questions may be worth 9 or 12 marks and require longer more balanced answers.
