The use of statistics and charts in GCSE Statistics to analyse climate trends

Understanding the state of the UK climate and how it is changing requires more than just observing weather patterns. The Met Office, the United Kingdom’s national weather service, relies heavily on statistics and visual tools like charts and graphs to track, analyse, and communicate climate trends. These tools - many of which are studied in our Edexcel GCSE Statistics (9-1) course - help transform vast amounts of raw data into clear, actionable insights that inform policy, public awareness and scientific research.

Using statistics to identify climate trends


The foundation of any statistical analysis is reliable data and the Met Office use a network of weather stations across the UK, satellite observations, ocean buoys, and atmospheric sensors with a range of data collected over decades to enable trends to be determined.


The Met Office employs statisticians who calculate averages, anomalies and extremes to understand how the climate behaves year after year. For example, they may calculate:


  • Mean temperature: Calculating the average temperature over a month or year to help identify warming or cooling trends.


  • Temperature anomalies: Comparing current temperatures to a long-term baseline to reveal any deviations from expected conditions.


  • Frequency of extreme events: Counting how often heatwaves, heavy rainfall, or storms occur to show shifts in climate variability.


For example, the Met Office calculated a UK mean maximum temperature anomaly of +2.1 degrees Celsius for the spring and summer of 2025.


More complex statistical tests can also help determine whether observed changes are significant or just natural variability. This distinction is crucial for understanding the impact of human activities on the climate.



The role of charts and graphs in climate analysis


Charts and graphs are useful statistical techniques to make complex data accessible and understandable, such as by highlighting trends, comparisons and anomalies.


Many of the charts studied in GCSE Statistics may be prepared to analyse climate trends. Examples include:


  • Line graphs: Show temperature or rainfall changes over time, making trends easy to spot.


  • Bar charts: Compare data across different regions or time periods.


  • Choropleth maps: Display temperature or precipitation intensity across geographic areas.

  • Scatter plots: Reveal relationships between variables, such as temperature and carbon dioxide levels.

These visual representations of the data support communication between scientists, policymakers and the public. For example, a line graph showing average temperatures rising over 50 years supports the case for climate change. Remember that any data should be presented in the most appropriate format depending on its purpose and target audience.



The ongoing use of statistics and charts remains central to understanding the UK’s changing climate. These tools provide a clear picture of past and present conditions, helping society prepare for the future.
